Reflection 3 Paper: Ethics as a Graphic Designer

When starting any business you should know that policies for privacy, security and safe rules. When I started working at Clarkston Chamber of Commerce, I found out that what information you get from them should stay with them unless you ask to use it for personal use. This is also taught at school and any work place situation. No personal information from the company should be used in any way for personal use nor should it be taken out of company. There is the situation you to take into account an ethical situations for the company and some one’s well being. It is a fine boarder you have to know the ethical rules as well and may a good judgment call for your well being and again that of others.
Now for security and safe rules were not talked to me at my internship, but I think that more goes under security and safe rules go under AIGA Standards of Professional Practice and ethics. See in my fields my responsibilities are to my clients, other designers, the public and environment. Each one of these has an effect on what my responsibilities as a designer and as student in my career. For an example, I have to be secure in my work and make sure I am not copyrighting someone else’s work. Also for safety rules I have to make sure I don’t hurt myself while on the job. Not much to know and explain there.

Well, this week there wasn't much I could talk about because my privacy, security and safety rules are pretty well known. Most was learned from ethics class, talking to other professionals in the field and my teachers at the college. Thanks for reading. See you next week.

Reflection 2 Paper: Career Goals 5 to 10 years from now.

So this week our question is what are your career goals for five and ten years from now? How will I achieve them? Now, this is a very good question. Most people don’t even have a plan out of college let alone know what to do or how to achieve it. Well, lucky for me I have been planning what I have wanted to do with my career since I started college. Here is my list of goals and what I plan to do to get them.
After finishing my degree within the first year I would like to be working in the field. I will start by having my resume circling the websites like Monster.com, Indeed.com, Career Builder.com and Baker system. I will also have a website up and running for employers to look at my current work. For an interview purposes, I plan to have an identity package so I can give my employers when I meet them.
Hopefully by year three, if I am hired by a company and getting some experience. If not, (which I hope this doesn’t happen) I will be making flyer and posting them to Facebook, friends, family and word of mouth on getting work. I will also go to companies and business that need a redesign on their work and see if I can help them out. I will also try contract work from temp services and businesses that want their work sent out.
By year five, I will either be working in a company with a stable job gaining more work experience or starting my own company with my good clientele. I will be keeping up with the latest software upgrades and learning new trends for the industry. Also, I will attend conferences or workshops that are good for my educational purposes. I will keep my portfolio up-to-date and add new material to the content of my website and print.
Now year 7, is when it will get interesting for me. This is the year I will step up my game either on my job or in my business. If I am working for a company, I will be learning everything an Art Director does in their job. I will learn, study and get help from people in my building to find out what the details of the job will be and if I will have to go back to school to up-grade my skills. If I own a business, I will want to take on more work, hire people, and build a high clientele that will reach to other businesses in the local area.
I have reached 10 years and plus, WOW, I can’t believe it has been ten years. I will have to say that by this time. I will either be an Art Director for a company I work for or an owner of my own company. On either side my co-workers, employees and clients will enjoy working with me and hopefully they will have the same drive, passion and commitment to their work and the company as I do.

Now, as I read this I hope in five to ten years, these things come true, but I promise to do my best in everything I do with what I got to make these goes come true. Hey, If I can get through college after having two carpel tunnel surgeries, gallbladder surgery, car and computer problems brake down and losing my job, plus get not one but two different degrees I think I can make it.

Introduction and Reflection 1 Paper: Goals for internship

Introduction

Hello everyone, I am sorry I haven't been on here in a very, very long time. After graduation life was crazy and I will explain it late, but it will be on my other site Jennifer's Life, if you want to find out what is going on with me since graduation. Anyways, since this is my professional blog site, I decided to get a little personal on here and let you read my Reflections and assignments I did weekly for my internship. It's from my point-of-view of what I was going through during my internship and being professional as much as I could. The papers I did for my class assignments and reflection papers don't sound professional. I wanted to make it entertaining for the reader while educating them at the same time. I think I succeeded because a week before graduation I met with my dean of my program to talk about an issue I had and we solved the issue, but when I told her my name she knew who I was. I never met my dean before. I never needed a reason to meet her until now. Anyways, the way she new me was because of my assignments and reflection papers. She said out of all the people's papers she had to read, mine were the most entertaining. So that proves that. (Laugh Out Loud). If you don't know where my internship was at, well, it was the Clarkston Chamber of Commerce.

So In the headline I will write if my paper was a reflections paper or assignment paper and the number. **Note** Reflection papers are more personal and my point-of-view. Assignment papers are more professional and give information more. There is a total of 15 papers. I have 10 reflection papers and 5 assignment papers. After these are all out then I will be writing about my thoughts on my career and learning how to do podcast. If I ever learn how to do it. LOL. One day I will. Well here is my reflection 1 paper.

Reflection 1 Paper: Goals for my internship

Well hello, my name is Jennifer Doran. Now I know I shouldn't be doing this type of writing but I find it better entertaining to write this as a journal then a formal paper. You may be wondering, why? Well, I want to write this as a journal format because this is my last and final year in college. I would like my kids one day to read this and for myself too. Anyways, I am going to list three goals of mine for my last internship for this term and how I plan to accomplish them.
My first goal is to utilize my skills that I have learned since starting college. The first thing I would do is get the assignment/project from my employer. If I didn’t get a specific list of details also called specs sheet, this is when my series of questions would begin. After getting all my details for the projects and information on whom to contact if I have further questions, I would start by making a time management sheet of when everything needs to be done. I would collect all information and photos then start using the programs I learned from school.
This leads me to my second goal creating new and fresh art work. Now, the way I go about making sure my work is new and fresh is by checking out my competitions work. I do the research on different types of artwork. This helps me with two things, one, making sure what is already published to not become a copy cat. Secondly, it will help me create a new idea from old examples. Sometimes an old example can turn into being a new idea.
This brings me to my last goal attracting people outside the Clarkston area to come see what their little town has to offer. I am hoping with my new fresh and new ideas for their logos, maps and some other things they have for me that I can bring in that new revenue. I hope by making new up-to-date images, logos, and maps (maybe interactive ones for the internet), that new people will show up. Those that show up will tell them nice shops and spend the word. Also having social media sites to help advertise helps too.
In the end, I am hoping to complete and amaze my internship employers on my artwork, hard work and willing to complete any project they may have for me. I plan at the end of my internship to write my last reflection on how I really did on these projects. I hope you enjoyed my writing and can’t wait for the next one.
Thanks again,

Jennifer Doran

How to avoid depression when unemployed

Hello again, I don’t know if anyone has covered this subject or if they have give any helpful advice. Well I am here to write about my experience of getting over depression when unemployed. I know I haven’t been unemployed for long, but being without money is hard to deal with during these hard times. I have found that my focus is best focused on goals. I set up daily goals to accomplish and it makes me feel better about myself and what I am doing here on earth.

See, I have done research that men have a link to depression when they lose their job. It is part of their DNA to want to provide and for their self worth is connected to having money. When they don’t have money then it brings their self-esteem down. This is true for women too. Women are the same, if we don’t feel like we are doing something whether it be for our job, our man, or kids then we don’t feel like much. Anyways, back to my goals. I found out that being goal oriented helps keep up my self-esteem. Something I know I can accomplish and be happy about without it affecting my personality for a job interview. My types of goals are physical, mental, job related, in spiritual, behavioral, relational and personal goals. I will explain each one in detail and why it is helping me.

My physical goals are to health keep up my strength, physical health, and food intake. What I mean by keeping up my strength is that any job that requires me to lift a certain weight limit then I try to work my goal to that limit and then over that limit to make sure I am able to work that job. I also want to make sure my physical health is in good standing for when I go for an interview or to meet someone. I have wanted to lose weight for some time now. So, I set a goal for a physical activity I enjoy doing and work to reach it by a certain date or before that date. I like to learn about health food and what to do for food intake. For example, write a food journal to make sure I am not over eating in my unemployment situation. So health is important.

My mental health is very important. The one thing you don’t want to look like when you go for an interview is to look desperate or needy for a job. Mentally you don’t know you are saying or giving off signs that you are desperate for a job, but you can. So to keep up your mental state of mind is to do stuff that helps you keeps you happy. For me, I am working on my confidence. That is a mental exercise all on it’s own and employers will know if you don’t have the confidence they are seeking they can read it off you. I also do things that make me happy like work on art work, and read books I have wanted to read for a long time. Also singing helps, reading and hearing positive affirmations help too. Just keep yourself in a happy mind set and the employers will see it too and better chance of getting that job you want.

Job related information. If you are in a special field like technology, medical, accounting or any other then I suggest studying. Yes, I said study. The reason I say to study is because you can be up to date on the most recent technologies or methods to use in your field. You can build up your portfolio and update your resume with the most up-to-date work in the market. Employers want the most up-to-date information and knowledge. You could also go back to school if you want to change your situation, further your further/career or just change careers completely. If you graduated like me then I just suggest learn from old books that you own and learn things you overlooked or missed during school.

Spiritual (if you’re spiritual), this helps to connect with a higher power, god, Jesus or any other religion you part take in. It is good to connect to something other than yourself. I just know that having this connection for me is a good thing. It helps me grow as a person and I feel like I have a purpose on this earth. Some kind of impact I will leave behind for the better and I can help do that with the church. If you’re not with a church then you can do activities that make you feel better too.

Behavioral is another important thing. This deals with confidence and how you treat people. Now I am learning this myself because I am learning physiology, human behavior and how to read a situation. Also I am learning how to build confidence. An employer wants a confident worker. They also want to know you can get the work done and to work with people. So learning how to treat people will help you in finding a job.
Relational relations are important with find a job. Relational are community/friends/family they can help you get through the tough parts of your life, which you feel is right now. With the right friends they will motivate, inspire, and make you feel good about yourself. They can bring your spirits up when you are down and also keep an eye out for hiring signs for you to apply too. Family can help you with money (if they have it) with your bills and get you back on your feet. They may also know people and making connections with family or in your community it will help. Any help find a job is good.

Personal goals are good to have. So besides what I have listed up above, I have found out that having personal goals can help you get through the day better. They can be daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. Mine are usually daily and yearly. I go by with each day with a plan then if something comes up I work around it. I also have had yearly goals for myself since I was in my teen years. The list gets changed every year and sometimes things get done, but more gets added. See I am a geek/nerd. I love to learn and to explore, so I add things I did and learn something new. I think everyone should want to learn. This world is huge and learning is knowledge and knowledge is power. So go out there and learn.

Well, I hope this has been helpful. This is just what I know and have experienced to get me through my depression and it helps. Please if you have any comments please leave them below and if you had a different experience to get you through then please tell me. I would love to hear. Thanks for reading.
